Spain will face Italy in Euro 2016’s round of 16 after they failed to win Group D.
Vicente Del Bosque’s men missed a penalty as they were stunned by Croatia in Bordeaux, meaning that they were leapfrogged to top spot in the group.
Ivan Perisic beat Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea with the help of a slight deflection at the near-post to complete Croatia’s comeback from a goal down.
Alvaro Morata had given Spain the lead in the first six minutes but Nikita Kalinic levelled before the break.
Sergio Ramos saw a penalty saved in the latter stages before Perisic slammed home the winning strike.
It means that Spain will now be forced to face off against Italy , who are guaranteed to win Group E regardless of how the final day results go.
The game will take place at 5pm on Monday June 27.
Spain’s loss to Croatia marks potentially bad news for England, as France, Germany, Spain and Italy are all now on their side of the draw.
It is just the second match confirmed in the knockout stages after the tie between Switzerland and Poland was confirmed earlier in the day.
Earlier in the day, Northern Ireland also added their name into the round of 16. They will face off against either France or Wales, dependent on other results.
The group stage comes to a conclusion on Wednesday evening.
