It is strange the amount of criticism Karim Benzema gets given how he is Real Madrid’s ninth highest goalscorer ever in LaLiga, and not a single one of them have come from the spot in domestic competition.
Benzema’s only Real Madrid penalty, in fact, came back on November 10, 2011 against Murcia in a 4-1 Copa del Rey victory, as he has never even stepped up to take one in LaLiga.
The Frenchman remains tied with Amancio Amaro at 119 league strikes, although the Galician did score from 10 penalties.
If you take penalties out of the occasion, Benzema has scored as many goals as club legend Emilio Butragueno, which is quite the feat for a player some were demanding be benched in favour of Alvaro Morata just a few months ago.
With only six penalties to his name his entire career (three with Lyon, two with France and one with Real), the French striker steps up in other ways to deliver a goal whenever his team need it most.
