After a disastrous start to the season, Chelsea have turned things completely on their head as no team has won more points than their 19 in the Premier League in 2016.
Guus Hiddink’s arrival at Chelsea has been a masterstroke from Roman Abramovich. The Dutchman first steadied the ship, and now he’s ploughing forward in search of a European finish in the Premier League.
The Blues are still unbeaten domestically since Jose Mourinho was sacked and the Dutchman was hired as his short-term replacement, extending their run to 12 games last night.
In 2016 alone, no team has won more points than their 19 either and that has come from five wins out of nine matches. Three of those have come in the last three games, making this run Chelsea’s best so far this season.
Tottenham Hotspur, who play West Ham away tonight, are the only side able to match Chelsea’s points tally during the calendar year.
After losing nine of their opening 16 games, everyone expected an improvement of sorts when Hiddink arrived but no one can honestly say they could have seen the Blues then go unbeaten for 12 more matches.
They have even climbed above Liverpool and Everton in the league table – though the Reds do have two games in hand on Chelsea.
In 2016, Chelsea have scored 19 goals in their 10 league matches and conceded just nine. They have kept three clean sheets with one even coming away to Arsenal at the Emirates last month.
