“Having Messi at Al Ettifaq is a dream come true for me,” Gerrard stated in an interview with MBC Masr 2. He is a fantastic talent and would be very beneficial to the team.

“I know it’s difficult for him to move to Saudi Arabia, but there’s nothing wrong with dreaming.”

After winning the Scottish Premiership in 2020–21, Gerrard joined Villa from Rangers. Nevertheless, he was removed of his duties in October 2022. After getting off to a great start, winning eight of his first 16 Premier League games in charge, he lost four of his last 22 games at Villa.

Gerrard took over as manager of Al-Ettifaq, a Saudi Pro League team, on July 3, 2023.

It was announced on January 18, 2024, that Gerrard had agreed to a two-year contract extension with the team, which would now expire in 2027.
