Luis Suarez is a doubt for Uruguay’s Copa America campaign after he appeared to limp off in tears with an injury during the Copa del Rey final.
The Barcelona striker, who finished top scorer in La Liga this season, declined a stretcher but limped off in significant amounts of discomfort during the second half of the final at the Vicente Calderón in Madrid.
Clutching his hamstring, Suarez – who has scored 59 goals in all competitions – looked distraught and was captured crying as he sat on the bench.
He is also now a severe doubt for the Copa America Centenario to be held in the USA this summer.
As well as a huge blow to Oscar Washington Tabarez’s side, who are the Copa’s most successful team with 15 wins, it is an enormous disappointment for the tournament’s organisers.
Suarez’s club-mate Neymar has opted to play in the Rio Olympics rather than the June tournament, which is a special edition competition pitting the top nations in South, Central and North America against each other.
Uruguay’s first group fixture is against Mexico on June 5 before matches against Venezuela and Jamaica.
