Niklas Sule looks set to miss the rest of Bayern Munich’s season and possibly Germany’s Euro 2020 campaign after he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament tear. The 24-year-old central defender picked up the injury to his left knee when he landed awkwardly in the early stages of Bayern’s 2-2 Bundesliga draw at FC Augsburg on Saturday.
Bayern confirmed that Sule had suffered an ACL tear and is due to undergo surgery on Sunday before starting a lengthy spell of rehabilitation.
The Bavarians said it is a “big Blow” to lose the player who has started all 12 competitive matches for the club this season.
Sule, who suffered a similar injury during his time at Hoffenheim in the 2014-15 season, is also a major doubt for Euro 2020 which is just eight months away.
Germany coach Joachim Low said: “That’s bitter news for Niklas himself, and we wish him all the best. But losing him also hurts us and compromises the development of our young team. “Niklas is a face of the new generation. He was an anchor in our plans.”
Sule’s absence from the Bayern side will open the door for former Germany international Jerome Boateng to come into the first team.
The 31-year-old looked set to leave the Allianz Arena in the summer, but he could now be an important player in boss Niko Kovac’s plans.
Bayern’s draw at Augsburg means they have won only half of their eight matches so far this term and sit in third place in the Bundesliga – a point behind leaders Borussia Monchengladbach.
