Kalmar sporting director Thomas Andersson Borstam has revealed that the Swedish club are in talks with Liverpool over the loan signing of young Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi.
Awoniyi joined the club last year and was immediately sent out on loan to Germany with Frankfurt in the Bundesliga 2, but he has struggled there and the Reds want to send him to a new club.
The 18-year-old has only scored one goal for the German club while most of his appearances have come off the substitutes’ bench, and Kalmar are keen to sign him and offer him plenty more opportunities to play.
Director Borstam has revealed that Liverpool and Kalmar are in talks over a loan move for the teenage forward, and the Reds are keen to see him playing more regularly.
“We are in contact with Liverpool about having Taiwo on loan. It can be anything, we’ll see what happens,” Borstam said, as reported by Fotbollskanalen.
“We have had a good and positive dialogue, and so we’ll see where it lands.”
Awoniyi is yet to represent Liverpool’s first team but could well have a future at the club should he impress on his proposed loan deal with the Swedish side.
Having had a taste of European football for almost a year after spending all of his earlier years playing in Nigeria, Awoniyi can now push for more regular first-team action should his loan move to Kalmar go through, while Liverpool can also get a proper look at what type of talent they have on their books.
