Chelsea captain John Terry hopes that fans at the club do not forget his services and commitment to the Blues when he departs at the end of the season.
The 35-year-old hasn’t been offered a new contract, resulting in the veteran defender to look for another club before finally hanging up his boots.
Terry has been at Stamford Bridge since 1998 and has played 700 games in that time, winning four Premier League titles, five FA Cups and the Champions League but he has admitted he fears that he will be forgotten once he leaves.
“Me and Lamps [Frank Lampard] spent ages talking about it, saying we’d love to catch this player or that player,” Terry is quoted as saying by the Evening Standard. “We’d set ourselves targets: keep playing, stay fit, look after ourselves and get there. We have done, we have surpassed so many players on the way and we did it together which makes it even more special.”
“I am hoping in years to come we aren’t forgotten. That’s what everyone wants. I really hope we’re not and I don’t think we will be.”
Terry added that his achievement of staying at the same club for the majority of his career is a rarity now.
“I think it’s a rarity now, you don’t get too many players coming through and staying at one club,” he continued. “I’m delighted with what I’ve achieved and I’m hoping to make that 701, 702 and still go as far as I can go.”
The centre-back has struggled to maintain his form this season, winning only 61% of his duels in the Premier League and scoring just one goal. Compared to last term, where he played every single minute of the campaign for the Blues, Terry scored five goals and won 37 out of 57 attempted tackles.
Much like Didier Drogba, Frank Lampard and Jose Mourinho before him, Chelsea fans rarely forget their heroes but there is a definite sense that the west London club need a major reshuffle.
