John Terry praised the home fans for their backing as Chelsea salvaged a point yesterday – then flatly denied the club was making efforts to keep him.
The 35-year-old went on the front foot again after the 1-1 draw with Manchester United by insisting there had been no fresh talks about a new contract.
The Blues last week suggested dialogue was ongoing. But the central defender, whose current deal ends in the summer, insisted that was not the case. And the Stamford Bridge faithful made clear their views, chanting: “John Terry, we want you to stay.”
Terry said: “It’s a difficult one. The club is the most important thing but there’s no communication at the moment.
“I said what I had to say, that’s how it is. I’ve made it very clear I want to stay, but more important is getting up to where we should be in the table. The fans were incredible, for me the best fans in the world.
“What they’ve done for me, I’ll never forget – those memories will stay with me forever.”
It was another strong message from Terry, who seems to be trying to crank up the pressure on the club to extend his contract.
He went public last week by revealing his time in west London was being brought to an end. Many players would have taken a more diplomatic line.
