Chelsea have confirmed that captain John Terry will be out for approximately 10 days with an ankle injury and will thus miss the visit of Liverpool on Friday and next Tuesday’s League Cup clash with Leicester City.
The 35-year-old was in agony at the Liberty Stadium on Sunday, after rolling on his ankle in the dying seconds of the 2-2 draw with Swansea City.
The former England skipper took to Instagram later that evening to update fans on the state of his ankle, with Chelsea’s medical staff applying various remedies to reduce the swelling of his left foot.
However, it has done little to help his recovery ahead of the game with Liverpool on Friday night and the club confirmed in a statement on Tuesday the skipper would be out of the fixture with ‘strained ligaments’.
The club statement read: “John Terry’s injury suffered in Sunday’s game at Swansea is strained ligaments in his foot. He will be out for approximately 10 days.
“Our captain was injured in the closing minutes of the 2-2 draw at the Liberty Stadium. He completed the game in pain and Antonio Conte confirmed afterwards the problem would need medical assessment.”
Chelsea manager Antonio Conte is likely to now turn to former Paris Saint- Germain defender David Luiz in place of Terry for the game against Liverpool.
The Brazil international returned to Stamford Bridge in the final few hours of this summer’s transfer window and is a ready-made replacement for Terry, with Kurt Zouma still working his way back to full fitness.
Terry’s absence may pave the way for David Luiz to make his second debut for Chelsea following his deadline-day move back to Stamford Bridge, while fellow new boy Marcos Alonso is another option to deputise.
