Michael Beale’s Rangers Summer Transfer Spend Claim Blown Apart By Cub’s Own Account

The full cost of Michael Beale’s rebuilding of the Rangers over the summer has been revealed.

The former Ibrox manager was widely favored to put his own imprint on the squad he inherited. The Londoner took out his checkbook to pay for the services of Sam Lammers, Cyriel Dessers, Danilo, and Jose Cifuentes. While Jack Butland, Dujon Sterling, and Kieran Dowell were all free transfers, Abdallah Sima was a loan… albeit the freebies still included signing-on and agent fees.

Beale was quick to point out that rumors about the prices paid were “way off” the mark, implying that new strikers Dessers, Lammers, and Danilo cost them close to £14 million. Only Butland has been an undisputed success among their new additions, with others such as Dessers receiving harsh criticism since their arrival. The newcomers’ early poor performances contributed to Beale’s dismissal and replacement by Philippe Clement, who has overseen a significant improvement in fortunes for the Light Blues.

According to Beale’s claims, the Gers’ entire summer transfer cost will be around £13 million. However, the club’s records, which were released on Monday, revealed that £21 million was spent on new arrivals. This is significantly higher than the indicated raw fees, but it adds up when agent and signing-on fees are included.

The club accounts read: “The financial performance, couple with new investment received last year, allowed the board to invest heavily in the men’s and women’s squads and the stadium. A squad investment of £17.5million in the year under review, adds to the £7.5million in the previous year and was supplemented by a further £21m of net spend since the year end, in the summer transfer window.”
