Real Madrid’s 2024/25 season under Carlo Ancelotti has had its fair share of setbacks, most notably injuries that have had a significant impact on the team’s performance.
Despite these obstacles, the club did not make any important transfers. Even in January, when Ancelotti openly aired his concerns and asked for reinforcements, the club remained idle.
However, according to SPORT, Ancelotti was asked to provide feedback on the areas where Real Madrid needed to improve, and the names he offered have raised questions.
Ancelotti proposed two famous defensive players: Arsenal’s William Saliba and Manchester City’s Manuel Akanji.
Saliba, a crucial component in Arsenal’s defence, had publicly stated his desire to remain with the club, making any potential transfer difficult.
Akanji, on the other hand, provides a more cheap choice, with a market worth of roughly €40 million.
The Swiss international, who has a deal with Manchester City until 2027, has been a reliable performer for Pep Guardiola’s team. While his profile is not as high-public as Saliba’s, he adds valuable experience.
Midfield reinforcements: Alexis Mac Allister and Sandro Tonali
Moving to midfield, Ancelotti’s suggestions were more diverse, featuring two players with opposing playing styles.

The first name mentioned was Alexis MacAllister, whom Ancelotti had previously recommended during his time at Brighton. However, the club felt that he did not fit the profile they needed.
The second midfielder Ancelotti mentioned was Sandro Tonali of Newcastle. Ancelotti is a major admirer of Tonali’s game and, having followed his progress from his days at AC Milan, believes the Italian would be an ideal replacement for Toni Kroos..
Despite these thoughtful recommendations, none of these players ever came close to wearing Real Madrid’s famed white shirt.
