Thierry Henry Compares Havertz To His Ex-Arsenal Teammate

Arsenal icon, Thierry Henry has compared Kai Havertz to his former teammate, Robin van Persie in a keen assessment of the player after Chelsea’s victory over Borussia Dortmund.

The 23-year-old was one of the standout performers for Chelsea as they defeated Dortmund at the Stamford Bridge and ultimately booked their place in the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League.

The German midfielder converted from the penalty spot to give the Blues a two goal advantage after Raheem Sterling scored from close range in the dying embers of the first half.

Initially, Havertz’s effort hit the upright but he had to retake the penalty as the official of the day, Danny Makkelie spotted an encroachment before the spot kick was taken.

After the final whistle, Henry, who was on a punditry duty for CBS Sports was full of praise for Havertz who he compared with van Persie particularly, for his hold up play and touches on the ball.

What Did Henry Say About Havertz?

“I thought he was good on the first goal,” Henry said on CBS Sports. “You could see he held the ball ever so well.

“It reminds [me] sometimes a little, very little, of a Robin – the way he can hold the ball. Robin van Persie was very good with his left foot. The touch was always immaculate to drive, to bring people along.

“This is why I think out of the guys that used to be wingers or a No 10, he plays as a No 9 because back to goal, he can hold the ball well.

“Now he needs to make sure he can transform that into more goals, because you can play off him.”

The goal turned out to be a crucial intervention, with the German’s successful conversion advancing his team to the round of eight and providing Graham Potter a big boost.

The Chelsea manager has been under intense pressure winning just three games in 15 matches prior to this encounter and they are currently languishing in tenth in the Premier League table.

Chelsea play Leicester city – who are also having a poor season – next in the EPL at the King Power Stadium.
