Tonga secure shock Aussie victory

Tonga backed up their win over the Great Britain Lions by inflicting a shock 16-12 defeat on Australia at Eden Park on Saturday. Having taken care of the best of the home nations 14-6 last time out, the Pacific Islanders kept up their form to inflict a first loss by a tier-two nation on the Kangaroos. With stunning defence roared on by the fans in Auckland, Tonga announced to the world that they are not a flash in the pan and want to be considered as one of the top rugby league sides in the world. The Aussies led 12-6 at the break thanks to tries by Jack Wighton and substitute Paul Vaughan, with Latrell Mitchell converting them both. Will Hopoate got Tonga on the board with a 21st-minute score, with Kotoni Staggs adding the extras and it was all about David Tangata-Toa’s side after the break. Michael Jennings and Tevita Pangai Jnr added tries during the second period and held on with some superb tackling to pull off an historic triumph.
