Tottenham crash out of Champions League with 2-1 loss to Monaco

Tottenham Hotspur have fallen at the first hurdle in the Champions League, exiting at the group stage.

Monaco hosted Spurs on Tuesday evening, with Mauricio Pochettino’s men needing at least a draw to keep their faint hopes of progression alive.

They slipped to a 2-1 loss, through, with ensured Bayer Leverkusen join Monaco in the Round of 16.

Son Heung-min missed a glorious opportunity to put Spurs ahead early on in the principality, but took a poor touch when attempting to round the goalkeeper.

Radamel Falcao then returned the favour, squandering a penalty after Fabinho was brought down by Eric Dier.

Hugo Lloris saved the rather tame effort from Falcao, with regular taker Fabinho having scored his last 16 successive penalties.

In the second half, the game was decided during a thunderous five-minute spell, which began with Djibril Sidibe heading in an opener.

Harry Kane levelled the tie with a penalty – a third spot-kick in as many games since his return from injury this month – but Thomas Lemar restored Monaco’s lead within one minute.

Spurs created a total of just five chances at the Stade Louis II – far inferior to their Champions League season average of 11.

The result leaves Spurs three points behind Leverkusen, but with an inferior head-to-head record.

Indeed, it was the north Londoners’ third defeat in five Champions League games – as many as they have suffered in the last 28 Premier League fixtures.
