Tottenham in talks with Boateng over a free transfer from Bayern Munich

Tottenham are poised to move for veteran Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng, according to reports.

Boateng, 32, will leave the Bundesliga champions at the end of the season with his deal set to run down – and Spurs are now the latest club tipped for a swoop.

Sky Germany have claimed that Tottenham are among the frontrunners for Boateng’s signature.

The report adds that talks between Boateng and Tottenham have already been held with a view to a potential transfer.

It was confirmed by Bayern that Boateng will not be offered fresh terms and his 10-year trophy-laden spell will imminently come to an end.

Arsenal and Chelsea have also been credited with an interest, but the latest rumblings from Boateng’s homeland point towards a dogfight to sign him on a free.

Barcelona are said to have kept a keen eye on the situation too, but the club are eyeing up a longer-term option and will not pursue Boateng.

The World Cup winner has made more than 350 appearances for Bayern since joining them from Manchester City in 2011.

As well as tasting Champions League success, Boateng has also won the Bundesliga five times, and the German Cup and German Super Cup on eight occasions.

With his 76 international caps, Boateng may provide the assurance and experience needed to solidify Jose Mourinho’s creaking defence.

Boateng’s Bayern deal is believed to net him £210,000-a-week, though, and this hefty figure would make him one of Tottenham’s highest earners.

Mourinho’s team have shipped 35 goals this campaign and their hopes of edging to a top four finish were dealt a severe blow after their defeat by Manchester United.

The setback also saw Spurs drop more points from winning positions in the top-flight – with the north London outfit surrendering 18 overall when leading.
