Tottenham set new record for biggest home attendance for an English club

Tottenham Hotspur made their return to the Champions League last night and in doing so they set a new record for the biggest home attendance for an English club in any competition, with 85,011 supporters cramming into Wembley to watch their meeting with Monaco.

The previous record was held by Manchester United, who were watched by 75,521 fans when they took on Lyon in the Champions League in 2008.

Tottenham are playing all of their home Champions League fixtures at Wembley this season due to construction work taking place at their White Hart Lane ground. The North London side are set to move into their new 61,000 capacity stadium in time for the 2018/19 season.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side got off to a disastrous start against Monaco as they fell two goals behind following strikes from Bernardo Silva and Lemar.

However, they battled well thereafter and reduced the deficit through a goal from Toby Alderweireld.

Tottenham managed to get to the quarter-finals of the Champions League when they were last in the competition in the 2010/11 season, but it will be a difficult task for them to match that feat this time around.

It will also be interesting to see whether Tottenham’s European involvement will have an adverse effect on their league commitments, with Pochettino having to manage his squad carefully.
