According to his father, Newcastle ‘came forward’ for the player during the winter transfer window, but Empoli blocked any departure until this summer.
Vicario was announced as Tottenham’s first summer signing yesterday, joining the club in a €20 million deal from Italian side Empoli after weeks of speculation. According to sport witness
He joins Tottenham as a long-term replacement for Hugo Lloris, who has signalled his desire to leave the club this summer.
Vicario’s move to London is his first outside of Italy, where he had previously played for Udinese, Venezia, Cagliari, Perugia, and Empoli on loan and permanently.
Prior to this week’s signing, he had been linked with a move to England, with Everton, Crystal Palace, and Brighton all credited with an interest in the last year or so.
Newcastle were not among them, despite Nick Pope’s success at the club since joining from Burnley last summer, but his father claims they were considering a January transfer.
