UEFA Make Decision On Man United Europa League Participation

Manchester United are reportedly set to compete in the 2024/25 UEFA Europa League alongside INEOS-owned French outfit, OGC Nice.

After finishing eighth in the Premier League, United appeared destined to miss out on European football. However, their victory over Manchester City in the FA Cup final guaranteed them a place in UEFA’s secondary competition.

But because of UEFA’s regulations regarding multi-club ownership, worries surfaced that United’s participation in the competition alongside Nice might present a problem. According to the rules, unless certain requirements are satisfied, two clubs owned by the same owner are not permitted to participate in the same competition.

INEOS presently owns a 27% share in United. But additional investment is anticipated to increase that percentage to a level above UEFA’s 30% requirement for the multi-club ownership regulations to be applicable.

INEOS completed the takeover of Nice in 2019, gaining 100% ownership of the club.

According to the Times as cited by GiveMeSport, the Red Devils are expected to receive permission to play alongside Nice when UEFA’s Club Financial Control Board (CFCB) renders a decision on the subject on Monday, June 3.

The decision also impacts Manchester City whose sister club, Girona advanced to the Champions League after placing third in La Liga. The City Football Group owns both Girona and City, and it is also said that they will be permitted to compete together.

It is said that because the 2024–25 European season will be remembered as a transitional one. And that decisions will be more stringent in subsequent seasons, both parties have been given sufficient leeway.
