Unbeaten season possible for Wijnaldum

Georginio Wijnaldum says there is no reason why Liverpool cannot go through the Premier League season unbeaten – but it isn’t necessarily a target. The Arsenal team of 2003-04 are the only side to have gone through a league campaign unbeaten in the Premier League era.
Liverpool have made an incredible start to the season with eight wins in as many games to sit eight points clear of nearest challengers Manchester City at the top of the table.
The Anfield outfit have won their last 17 Premier League games in a row, a run stretching back to March last season when they were held to a 0-0 draw at Everton in the Merseyside derby.
Wijnaldum says it is “possible” they could go through the current campaign without tasting defeat.
However, the Dutchman insists they have not set a specific target to match Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles’ and stressed they are simply focusing on each game as it comes. “Nobody knows how it’s going to be,” he said. “We have had some luck up to now, but we have also put a lot of hard work in. “We don’t think about the fact that Arsenal did not lose in that season. We just try to give everything in every game.”
Liverpool head to Old Trafford on Sunday and their lead at the top may have been cut to five points by the time they take on Manchester United, with City facing Crystal Palace in the late kick-off on Saturday.
United have made a disappointing start to the campaign with just two wins in eight Premier League games so far, but Wijnaldum expects a stern test regardless. “The way we handle every match is to respect the opponent and give 100 per cent,” he added. “Every game in the Premier League is tough. Look at the results we have had. I can’t remember a game where it was easy.”
Liverpool were held to a goalless draw at Old Trafford in the corresponding fixture last season and they haven’t won at the home of their fierce rivals in the league since the 2013-14 campaign, when two goals from Steven Gerrard and a Luis Suarez effort secured a 3-0 success.
