Former Ajax stars Edwin van der Sar and Marc Overmars led the line as Johan Cruyff was honoured in his hometown of Amsterdam on Sunday with thousands of fans lining the streets in memory of the legendary Dutchman.
Cruyff died on March 24 from lung cancer at the age of 68.
The Netherlands legend is widely regarded as the finest European footballer of all time, and was remembered by close to 100,000 people in the Nou Camp ahead of Saturday’s El Clasico between Barcelona and Real Madrid.
On Sunday, his hometown supporters paid tribute in the Dutch capital with a mass march that celebrated the achievements of the three-time Ballon d’Or winner.
The streets were adorned with banners and flags of the ex-Barcelona superstar, while some let off flares.
Cruyff, who helped his country reach the World Cup final in 1974 and won three successive European Cups as a player with Ajax, was told of his illness in October.
After the news of Cruyff’s death broke last week, a short statement on his official website read: “On March 24 2016 Johan Cruyff (68) died peacefully in Barcelona, surrounded by his family after a hard fought battle with cancer.”
The march was staged ahead of Ajax’s meeting with PEC Zwolle on Sunday, with the likes of Marc Overmars and Edwin van der Sar taking part.
