Van Dijk Defends Teammate After Mistake In Setback Draw

Liverpool defender, Virgil van Dijk has come to the defence of his teammate, Alexis Mac Allister following his mistake in the Reds’ 2-2 draw against Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday.

Mac Allister made a costly error that allowed Simon Adingra to score first, but Mohamed Salah scored twice to change the course of the match.

But in the 78th minute, Lewis Dunk equalized, and the game on the south coast ended with a point for each team.

Following the altercation, the Reds’ captain Van Dijk decided to support Mac Allister and believed that he was partly to blame for Brighton’s opening goal at the Amex.

What Did Van Dijk Say About Mac Allister’s Costly Mistake?

‘Obviously, it is not only him [Mac Allister],’ the Dutch defender said. ‘It is me as well.

‘It is a risky ball and we try to play out from the back. These things happen and you get punished. The way we bounced back was a great reaction.’

Then, when Pascal Gross avoided receiving a booking for hacking down Dominik Szoboszlai in the box, Van Dijk was asked if the Brighton player ought to have received a red card.

‘On the pitch you are thinking about this and you have to be careful for asking if [he] was going to get sent off,’ Van Dijk added.

‘I was curious for the reason why he didn’t get a booking. I didn’t see any replays on the pitch.

‘We win the penalty, we score the penalty and the ref didn’t give a yellow or a red. We have to accept it.’

After a disappointing 2022/23, Liverpool will be hoping to finish on a high by the end of this season. The Reds are currently 4th on the league standings with 17 points, just three points adrift of Tottenham Hotspur in the top spot.
