A brace from Robin van Persie has inspired Fenerbahce to a 2-0 victory over bitter rivals Galatasaray.
On a weekend of mouth-watering fixtures across Europe, one of the more eye- catching games took place at the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium between two of Turkish football’s biggest clubs and it was a tight affair in which the first goal was always going to prove crucial.
It went the way of the hosts as van Persie broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time and then made the game safe with his second of the evening as he converted from the spot to net his fifth league goal of the season.
The former Arsenal and Manchester United has found form in the last month as he also netted on his first return to Old Trafford in an Europa League tie in October and will be the toast of many Fener supporters.
The result means Fenerbahce leapfrog Galatasaray in the Turkish Super Lig and are once again three points behind leaders Besiktas.
