‘Very Soon’ – Newcastle United Set For Double Injury Boost As Duo Due To Train This Week

Matt Targett and Elliot Anderson of Newcastle United are “very close” to starting training again, according to head coach Eddie Howe.

Targett’s hamstring injury, sustained during the 3-0 Carabao Cup victory at Manchester United, required surgery, and he hasn’t played for the Magpies since early November. Meanwhile, Anderson’s back stress fracture has kept him out of commission for the last four months.

This season, United’s injured list has occasionally reached double digits, but it appears that there is now hope. When questioned on Friday on Targett and Anderson, Howe responded, “They’re a little bit closer.” They haven’t been seen training yet, but they should be returning very soon. That will greatly assist us.

According to The Telegraph, both players are scheduled to train this week.

Only three senior central midfield players—Breanu Guimaraes, Sean Longstaff, and Lewis Miley—have been available for Newcastle for months, but Joe Willock’s return and Anderson’s impending return will greatly strengthen that position. Targett’s comeback coincides with well-documented left-back issues for United.

Joe Willock and Alexander Isak were back for Howe’s team following their 4-1 loss at Arsenal last Saturday.

Isak was deemed fit to start at the Emirates after missing the previous three games due to a recurrent groin injury. He played 64 minutes.

For his first goal since November, Willock came on as a second-half replacement and headed home Dan Burn’s cross for a consolation goal.

Howe told NewcastleWorld: “I think Joe’s cameo was excellent and I think again he showed exactly what we’ve missed from him and his qualities of attacking the box late and getting goals.
