Sweden forward Viktor Gyökeres scored four goals in a 6-0 victory over Azerbaijan on Tuesday, surpassing Erling Haaland as the Nations League’s leading scorer.
The 26-year-old began the evening with five goals in five Nations League games and now has nine, two more than Haaland’s seven.
His third goal of the night, in the 58th minute, came just a few seconds after the game restarted following another Swedish goal, giving Sporting CP eight goals in six Nations League games, one more than Haaland.
Gyökeres, one of the most in-demand players in world football this season, didn’t stop there, scoring his fourth goal of the game shortly afterward.

“I’m hungry and want to score a lot of goals,” Gyökeres explained. “I feel in good shape. I’m usually at the proper place, and I try to finish in that area.”
“We needed to win by a specific goal difference, which we did. It was a pleasant night. “It’s exciting to score so many goals.”
Haaland was the leading scorer heading into the last evening of games, having netted seven goals for Norway, including a hat trick in a 5-0 victory over Kazakhstan on Sunday.
The Sporting CP attacker helped set up Dejan Kulusevski’s opening goal and scored his first goal in the 25th minute off a cross from Kulusevski. His second came in the 37th minute, from a tight angle after a defender forced a shot wide.
Gyökeres finished his hat trick in an unexpected manner after Azerbaijan’s kickoff. Kulusevski had just scored, and Azerbaijan played the ball back to defender Zamig Aliyev.
