Marseille manager Andre Villa-Boas says facing PSG is just “another game” for him and has criticised the disparity in finances. Since being taken over by the Qatar Sports Investment group in 2011, the Parc des Princes outfit have been the dominant force in French football.
They have amassed six Ligue 1 titles in that time and have also won numerous domestic cup competitions, though the Champions League still eludes them with the quarter-finals their furthest journey.
PSG have been so dominant due to their massive spending power, with Neymar breaking the world record for a transfer fee two years ago when he was signed from Barcelona for a fee of around £198million.
Kylian Mbappe is next on the list as he cost the club £116million, while the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Edinson Cavani, and Thiago Silva have all been hugely influential in their success over the years.
PSG take on Villas-Boas’ Marseille on Sunday, with the two clubs separated by eight points in the table as the reigning champions top the league after 10 games.
The former Chelsea and Spurs boss, however, has used his pre-match press conference to air his grievances with PSG’s clear financial advantage.
He insists that it is no longer a playing field in French football. “Now, we’re going to have a completely different game against a team that, for me, is not part of this Championship because of the investments they’ve made over the years,” Villas-Boas said. “We’re going to try to play the game for the game’s sake, but it’s a game that doesn’t mean much to me. PSG-Marseille, or Marseille-PSG, for me, this is an opportunity to try to do something.”
