With Spurs leading by one goal from the first leg, tensions were running very high in the early going on Merseyside.
Reds captain Virgil Van Dijk and former Everton striker Richarlison were at odds.
The Brazilian was caught in a ‘elbow’ during a scramble for the ball three minutes into the game, but Van Dijk was spared punishment.
The challenge infuriated Richarlison, but referee Craig Pawson allowed play to continue before gathering the players for a meeting.
The VAR determined that there was no on-field error to reverse the verdict, and Van Dijk was spared additional penalty after the event was reviewed and cleared for violent conduct.
The Dutchman won again, but it wasn’t the only incident involving Van Dijk and Richarlison that attracted attention, reports Sky Sports.
Shortly after, the two were entangled once more, with Van Dijk dragging the forward down on the Spurs box’s edge.
Van Dijk extended his hand to assist Richarlison in standing up, but he tugged it away before sprinting back into his own half.
