Warburton and Hayward added to Wales set-up

New Wales coach Wayne Pivac has added former captain Sam Warburton and ex fly-half Byron Hayward to his coaching team. New Zealander Pivac has taken over the reins from compatriot Warren Gatland following the conclusion of this year’s World Cup and Stephen Jones, Jonathan Humphreys and Neil Jenkins had already been confirmed as part of his backroom team. Former skipper Warburton, who won 74 caps for his country and captained the British and Irish Lions during two separate tours, will work as technical advisor (defence/breakdown). The 31-year-old was forced to retire from playing last year following a string of injuries, but he is looking forward to making the step into coaching. “It is a genuine privilege to be considered for such a role,” the former flanker said. “I can’t wait to do my utmost to contribute to help improve the team and players. With such a great group of players and management it is an amazing opportunity which I am very proud to be given.” Hayward, who won two caps for his country back in 1998, is returning to the Wales fold having previously worked as Under-20s head coach and National Academy skills coach before taking up his most recent position as defence coach for the Scarlets in 2014. Pivac is looking forward to welcoming both men into his coaching team and he certainly feels they will have a positive influence on the squad. “I’m delighted to bring both Byron and Sam into the set-up and add to what is already a vastly experienced coaching team,” Pivac confirmed. “Both individuals are highly respected, knowledgeable and experienced in their disciplines and will add a great deal to the environment.”
