Palmeiras youth coach Rogelio Andrade believes Watford have a star of the future on their hands in the shape of Joao Pedro. Watford signed Pedro from Fluminense in October 2018 on a five-year contract but he was unable to secure a work permit.
Pedro was finally granted the right to work in the UK earlier this week and he is set to link up with Watford in January.
He follows in the footsteps of countryman Richarlison, who also left Fluminense for Watford, and will hope to have a similar impact.
The 18-year-old has hit four goals in 21 Serie A appearances for the Tricolor and he will arrive in England surrounded by plenty of hype.
Andrade, who works as a youth coach with Palmeiras in Brazil, feels Pedro has all the attributes to be a hit in England after watching him in action over the past year. “He is really fast, he is born to score goals, he has two good feet and is a very good player,” Andrade told Watford’s official website. “We played against Fluminense Under-17s in a semi-final last season in the Brazil Cup and Joao Pedro scored the goal that knocked us out. He will do a lot of good things for Watford.”
The teenager will report for duty with Watford in the New Year but he is likely to spend time with the under-23s before being considered by Quique Sanchez Flores for first-team action.
Watford, however, could undoubtedly do with some additional flair in the forward line after struggling through the early stages of 2019-20.
They sit rock-bottom of the Premier League and have registered the fewest amount of goals, 5, of any side in the top-flight this season.
No player has scored more than one goal and, if he can hit the ground running, he could be considered by Sanchez Flores sooner rather than later.
