Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed that their transfer plans could be very limited this summer.
Speaking to the media ahead of Arsenal’s clash against Crystal Palace on Sunday, Wenger admitted that although he’d like to buy new players this summer, “it it not easy” to find them.
Here’s what he had to say:
“If you look at the top three teams, you will see they have not changed their team a lot. We have to strengthen our squad but it’s not obvious to find the players despite the money the English clubs will have. We are already working but we have to find the players and that is not easy.
“You cannot dismiss that the players are young: Alex Iwobi is 19, Mohamed Elneny is 23, Francis Coquelin 24, and they will be stronger next year but you need to keep a core of players and strengthen where we can. The team is going the right way.”
So, it seems like Wenger is happy with what he has right now, especially with Jack Wilshere and Santi Cazorla nearing full fitness, but Arsenal’s fans will be screaming for him to invest in a new holding midfielder and central defender this summer.
Maybe Wenger is just playing his cards close to his chest? However, with increased finances entering the coffers and Arsenal set to clinch yet another top four finish, you’d assume they will have a lot of money to spend this summer.
If they want to challenge for the PL title next season and not lose out to either Leicester City or Tottenham Hotspur as looks likely this campaign, then they simply have to buy two more world-class players in those defensive areas.
