Arsene Wenger believes Arsenal are only ‘one or two’ signings away from challenging for the Premier League title next season.
For the first time in 20 years, Arsenal have not made the Champions League after ending up fifth in the table, one point behind Liverpool who beat Middlesbrough on the final day of the season.
The Gunners mounted an early title challenge but have ended up 18 points behind Chelsea, who were crowned champions at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
But despite their shortfalls this season, Wenger insists he only needs two ‘top quality’ signings to overhaul Chelsea and the rest of Arsenal’s title rivals next term.
‘I think this group of players is good enough to come back,’ said the Arsenal boss.
‘They have learned a lot and they have gone through difficult periods this season and they have bounced back in a very strong way.
‘I think that will help them, absolutely, next season.
‘But first I think we have to keep 90 per cent of these players together and find one or two more who strengthen the group but we don’t need a lot. We don’t need many. But we need maybe top quality.’
