Timo Werner has indicated that “the fun got a bit lost” toward the end of his spell in west London, and maintained that Thomas Tuchel’s favoured Chelsea system did not work for him.
On August 9, Werner left Stamford Bridge and made a €30m (£25.2m/$30.5m) transfer to RB Leipzig, his previous team.
In 89 games for Chelsea, the German managed just 23 goals, falling short of the peak levels of his Bundesliga career.
He did, however, play a little over an hour in the final against Manchester City and helped the Blues win the Champions League in 2021.
What Did Werner Say About Leaving Chelsea?
Werner has finally given his reasoning for returning to Leipzig and ending his two-year stay at Stamford Bridge.
He stated on the Einfach mal Luppen podcast; “For me, the fun of playing football is in the foreground.
“Of course, I had great success at Chelsea, but the fun got a bit lost in the end because I didn’t play regularly anymore.
“I think the coach’s system of play didn’t suit me perfectly. That’s why it was clear to me that I wanted to take a new step. I’m at an age where I want to play as much as I can.
“I really associate very great successes with Chelsea – the greatest of my career.
“It will always be a special club for me. I will also stay in touch with many of the players from the team.”
How Is Werner Enjoying Life Back At RB Leipzig?
In Leipzig’s 2-2 draw with FC Koln last Saturday, Werner scored after just 36 minutes to get his new team off to a good start.

However, goalkeeper Marvin Schwabe’s blunder provided him with a significant assist.

Werner received a pass from Benjamin Henrichs and launched a long, bending effort. Henrichs should have stopped the weak effort, but instead he let the ball creep under his body and into the back of the net.
On Saturday, Leipzig and Werner are scheduled to return to away Bundesliga action against Union Berlin.
