Thomas Muller is being heavily linked with a move away from Bayern Munich, but there is a chance coach Niko Kovac could be gone first. Muller, a Bayern legend and pretty much part of the furniture at the Allianz Arena, has become disgruntled with his lack of game-time recently and is known to be considering his future with the Bavarians.
The Germany international pulling on another club’s jersey is unthinkable in many peoples’ eyes, but there is a chance that could happen if Kovac stays at the helm for the rest of the season and beyond.
There will be no shortage of clubs willing to offer Muller a route out with Manchester United among those known to be in the hunt and ready to swoop when the transfer window opens.
The powers that be at Bayern insist Muller is going nowhere and have dismissed the United rumours, and it is thought they could bring the axe down on Kovac before allowing the forward to leave.
Clearly all is not well between Muller and Kovac, and there have been rumblings that the Bayern boss is not particularly well liked in the dressing room.
The noises coming out of the Bayern dressing room have been telling. A number of players have reacted to rumours linking Muller with a move away by saying it cannot be allowed to happen, and Bayern without the 30-year-old would not be the same.
The emergence of Serge Gnarby and Kingsley Coman, though, has resulted in reduced game time for Muller, but there is a case to be made for him starting every week.
Bayern have again been inconsistent to say the least this season and the supporters feel he should be in the side. Kovac thinks otherwise.
Muller came off the bench to spare the blushes of Bayern in the DFB-Pokal on Tuesday night, grabbing the winning goal to see off Bochum. Further evidence of how valuable he is to the club.
There has been a suggestion that Muller will sit it out for now in the hope that Kovac will get the bullet first. A similar situation to that of Gareth Bale and Zinedine Zidane at Real Madrid maybe.
Bayern’s performances in the Champions League could be keeping Kovac in a job but despite winning the Bundesliga last season, his position is far from safe.
Muller cannot do anything before January and will be hoping to be back in the side by then. If not then a decision could be made to move on if Kovac is looking safe.
