Why Arsenal Defeat Of Real Madrid Could Be Good News For Chelsea

The Premier League will be assured at least five teams in the 2025-26 Champions League season following Arsenal dramatic 3-0 triumph against Real Madrid.

Two fantastic free-kicks from Declan Rice and another sensational finish from Mikel Merino ensured the Gunners clinched a comfortable quarter-final first leg victory on Tuesday night.

To earn one of the two additional berths—on top of the four given to the top four in the table—awarded to the top-ranked nations in the UEFA coefficient ranking, the English top flight just needed one victory from its clubs in any of the three European competitions.

This system divides the total number of points earned by each club by the number of clubs from that league competing in Europe. Teams receive two points for a win and one point for a draw.

According to The Metro, if Aston Villa win this year’s Champions League without making it through the Premier League table, and if either Manchester United or Tottenham Hotspur win the Europa League, England may have up to seven teams in the next tournament.

Spain and Germany are in third and fourth place, respectively, behind Italy.

With seven games left in the season, Nottingham Forest appear to be relatively established in third place, while Premier League leaders Liverpool and second-place Arsenal are expected to secure two of the five vacant spots.

Tenth-place Bournemouth, Chelsea, Newcastle United, Manchester City, Aston Villa, and Brighton are all still within eight points of one another.
