Unfortunately, Platini seems to be the early front runner since tacitly announcing his intention to run for the 26 February 2016 election.
I liked Platini in his very successful playing days. And I respect what he has achieved for Europe as UEFA president. But I have three reservations about his FIFA ambition, namely:
PRO UEFA: Platini from day one has always vigorously propagated UEFA agenda with no apologies even long before he became the UEFA president. So I think his FIFA presidency could tacitly or brazenly be pro-UEFA at the detriment of other confederations.
Europe may like him because they know he will fight their corner. But the rest of the world should beware!
Besides, Blatter is European just like Platini. Are other continents not capable of producing top man for FIFA’s biggest job? Food for thought ladies and gentlemen.
The second reason I don’t want Platini to succeed Blatter is that he is part and parcel of FIFA’s tainted image. Platini was one of Blatter’s many advisers before he became the UEFA president. And as the egghead of European confederation, he is automatically a member of FIFA’s Executive Council or Blatter’s kitchen cabinet.
This is put succinctly by one of Platini’s rivals for the FIFA top post Chung Mong-Joon of South Korea:”It will be very difficult for him (Platini) to have any meaningful reforms,” he said. “Mr Platini enjoys institutional support from the current structure of FIFA. Mr Platini is very much a product of the current system.”
Platini is full of crazy football ideas. Anybody who has studied him closely will tell you he is a man of one night one football idea, most of which are crazy, impracticable or very irritating like advocating 20 host nations for a 32-match European Championship!
And we must not forget that he is arguably the most vociferous voice against the use of technology in football, advancing Blatter’s lame argument that the game will lose its spontaneity once technology is used to aid some crucial ref decisions.
Simply put, Platini will turn football to an alien sport even to the staunchest adherents.
These are three major reasons why I don’t support Platini’s candidature for the upcoming FIFA elections.
