Chris Wilder was disappointed his Sheffield United side’s impressive 1-1 draw at Tottenham on Saturday was again overshadowed by more VAR controversy. Wilder watched as his side recovered from going a goal behind at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium when David McGoldrick scored what looked like an equaliser just 129 seconds after Son Heung-min put the hosts ahead.
The Republic of Ireland international converted at the far post from Enda Stevens’ cross but John Lundstram’s toe was ruled to be offside in the opening phase of the attack.
It was anything but clear and obvious as it took over three minutes for the Video Assistant Referee, Jonathan Moss, at Stockley Park to make the call.
Wilder’s men did grab a deserved share of the spoils when George Baldock scored a fortuitous equaliser in the 78th minute but the manager was left reflecting on how VAR was again a “major talking point”.
He said: “The length of that stoppage I think doesn’t do anybody any good, from the managers to players and, more importantly, the supporters. If it is offside, it’s offside and we have to get on with it and accept it. “I am disappointed with that because we should be talking about how we have gone toe-to-toe with the Champions League finalists, it fills me with immense pride with how we have played.”
The draw was enough to ensure Sheffield United go into the two-week international break in the lofty heights of fifth position in the Premier League.
They sit on 17 points from their opening 12 games, with Arsenal just behind them on goal difference.
Tottenham are down in 14th position after a disappointing start to the season but only three points separate the Blades and Everton ten places below them in 15th.
