Iker Casillas has said that he will continue to fight for his place in the Spain side at Euro 2016, although he conceded that there will be major news interest if Manchester United‘s David De Gea is selected ahead of him.
Porto goalkeeper Casillas played a major part in Spain’s success at Euro 2008, World Cup 2010 and Euro 2012, and has amassed 166 caps for his country, but there have been suggestions that De Gea, who has enjoyed an impressive campaign, could be chosen instead.
As reported by AS, Casillas said: “I don’t like talking too much about the Euros while I’m still not confirmed to be in it. I have to wait for Vicente’s list.
“If I go, I’ll fight and fight as I’ve always done for the national team. De Gea or me? Well, if De Gea plays, at least you’ll have some headlines.”
While De Gea continues to excel, Casillas appears to be past his best and failed to keep a clean sheet in his two Champions League appearances this season.
De Gea has kept 13 clean sheets in the Premier League and has made several tremendous saves. Despite his undoubted qualities, the goalkeeper has had to be patient for opportunities at international level and has so far made just eight appearances for Spain since making his senior debut in 2014.
Casillas is regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in recent history and enjoyed much success during his time at Real Madrid, but at the age of 34 he is now in the latter stages of his career and has struggled for consistency in recent campaigns.
