Williams undecided on 2020 driver line-up

Williams deputy team chief Claire Williams says there won’t be an announcement on their 2020 driver line-up until after the current season. It has been a year to forget for the Oxfordshire-based team, who currently sit at the bottom of the Constructors’ Championship, with just one point to their name. The lack of a competitive car has lead to Robert Kubica announcing he will be leaving the outfit at the end of the campaign and Williams have been taking their time on deciding who should succeed the Pole as George Russell’s team-mate. Formula 2 title contender Nicholas Latifi is widely expected to get the nod, having spent 2019 as Williams’ development driver, posting some impressive showings in practice. The Canadian is expected to feature for Williams at next week’s Brazilian Grand Prix but deputy team chief Williams is giving nothing away as to who will partner Russell in 2020, insisting they won’t decide until after the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. “The plan was always to have Nicholas Latifi in the car for these practice sessions that you’re seeing him in, in the next couple of races and in Mexico as well,” Williams said in Austin last weekend. “It’s no clear indication. We’ve made it very clear that we won’t be making our driver announcement for that second seat for 2020 until after Abu Dhabi this year.”
