Willian reveals the secret behind his success from free-kicks

Chelsea midfielder Willian has revealed that studying the technique of David Beckham and Ronaldinho is the secret behind his success from free-kicks this season.

The Brazilian has been in sensational form this campaign for the Blues, despite their troubles in the Premier League, but undoubtedly the most impressive part of his season has been the regularity in which he scores from a set-piece.

Two of Willian’s three goals in the league this season have come from free-kicks – the other a long ranged strike against Watford – and furthermore four of his five efforts in the Champions League have also been netted from dead ball situations.

It means that the 27-year-old has scored six free-kicks in the two competitions this campaign and the Blues playmaker has revealed which players have inspired his technique.

The former Anzhi player told Uefa‘s official website: “There are some players I always watched – various players who I knew hit the ball well.

“Ronaldinho and David Beckham, they took free-kicks and took them very well, so there are some players I always try to follow and to learn important things from so that I am able to score goals.”

Willian’s efforts for Chelsea this season were a large aspect of the club reaching the knock-out stages of the Champions League.

They are due to face French giants Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16 next week.

The South American is widely considered the Blues’ player of the campaign so far this year, with the No.22’s efforts for the side a shining positive in an otherwise bleak domestic campaign. They currently sit 13th in the Premier League.
