Wolves’ recruitment chief says Neves is going nowhere

Wolves’ head of recruitment John Marshall says Ruben Neves will not be leaving the club in January. The Portuguese midfielder has been the subject of transfer speculation all season, following a very impressive two-year stint at Molineux.
He originally joined the Black Country club in the summer of 2017 in a surprise deal with Porto worth in the region of £16million.
Neves was instrumental in Wolves’ promotion to the Premier League at the first attempt under Nuno Espirito Santo as he scored six goals in 42 Championship appearances.
Then, last season, he also played an integral role in the Black Country outfit finishing seventh in the Premier League, as they secured European football for the first time since 1981.
This season has not been so straightforward for the Midlands club, with the added demands of the Europa League putting a strain on their squad.
However, having recovered from a tricky start to the season, Wolves are currently eighth in the table following Sunday’s 2-1 win at home to Aston Villa, in which the 22-year-old scored.
Neves has continued to shine for Wolves and his performances have been seen him linked with several clubs, including Antonio Conte’s Inter Milan.
However, Marshall is adamant that Neves will not be sold in January, contrary to reports, as he is an indispensable member fo the squad.
He told TMW: “Without a doubt, he (Ruben) is a real top player. We are aware of the fact that so many top clubs follow him around Europe but we are focusing on him. He is not for sale.”
This season, Neves has already played 20 games for Wolves owing to their very busy schedule during the summer in the Europa League.
He has been an ever-present in Wolves’ midfield throughout the campaign and continues to form one half of a very effective partnership with compatriot Joao Moutinho.
International duty now calls for the Mozelo-born midfielder as Portgual prepare to play their final two Euro 2020 qualifiers.
The Euro 2016 champions know wins against both Lithuania and Luxembourg will guarantee their place in next summer’s tournament.
