Harry Kane said that his World Cup penalty miss will haunt him for the rest of his life and that he and Gareth Southgate have “unfinished business” with England.
England captain Kane has spoken out for the first time since missing a late penalty in Southgate’s team’s elimination from the World Cup less than a month ago.
Southgate has confirmed he will stay on as England manager since that game and Kane said: “I’m really happy [he’s staying].
“I feel like there’s some unfinished business there and he’s a fantastic coach. We’ve been close now on a few occasions.
“We looked strong in the tournament and it was small details that ended up not going our way. It will be nice to have another go at the Euros with the same team and staff.

“We hadn’t spoken [before Southgate’s decision to stay on].
“We spoke after the France game and we had a day or so just to reflect, but it’s his decision. I didn’t want to put any pressure on him and he knows how much we enjoy playing under him.
“He’s been fantastic for me and a lot of other players. Business starts in March again and we’ll be ready.”
What Did Harry Kane Say About His Penalty Miss?
On his penalty miss and how he has coped with the disappointment so far, Kane told the Evening Standard: “It was a tough moment for me. It’s never an easy thing to go through, but it’s part of football, part of the highs and lows of our sport.
“I’ll probably remember it for the rest of my life, but that’s part of the game. It’s not going to affect me as a player or as a person.”
Kane is now just two goals behind Jimmy Greaves in the list of all-time Tottenham goalscorers and has his eye on the north London derby against Arsenal on January 15 as a game in which to break the record.

Spurs entertain Portsmouth in the FA Cup first on Saturday and Kane said: “The derby would be a nice game [to break the record in], for sure, but I try not to think about records too much.
“It’s a really important game. Arsenal are top of the league and playing really well, so we’ll be ready for that. We’ve got to try to pick up some results ourselves and get some good momentum.”
