Monaco and Switzerland forward, Breel Embolo, who was a revelation at the Qatar World Cup, has received a six-figure sanction for making threats on a night out five years ago.
The 26-year old was found guilty of yelling “I’ll finish you off, I own all of Basel” during the altercation in his native country on May 27, 2018, and of threatening to beat up a man who was given a fractured nose by one of his friends.
A judge at the Basel criminal court sentenced him to a three-year probationary period and a conditional fine of 45 daily rates of 3,000 Swiss francs (£2,626), totalling £118,170.
He intends to appeal the outcome of the case.
Meanwhile, his friend was given a 10-month conditional jail term and forced to pay £2,628 in compensation for his attack on the victim.

What Happened?
The court heard how Embolo, who was playing for Bundesliga club Schalke at the time aged 21, had pulled up outside the Piadina Bar in Basel at around 5am, arriving in a black G-Class Mercedes.
He and his friends then got into a dispute with another group after a female Basel supporter had asked for a picture with their former player.
Embolo is claimed to have wanted the woman to stay with them. This prompted one of her colleagues – the man who had his nose broken – to intervene.
It was at that point that Embolo was heard saying: “Do you actually know who I am?”
He is said to have been the main aggressor, hurling insults towards the other group.

The man who had his nose broken argued: “I never posed any danger. I didn’t use bad language. I was threatened that I would be beaten up and that I would no longer be safe in Basel.”
Embolo admitted to the court that “it’s quite possible I said son of a b****”.
He was fined based on his salary at Monaco, where he currently plays. He has scored 14 goals in 42 matches since signing for the Ligue 1 side last summer.
He’s picked up 63 caps for his country since his debut in 2015. He has netted 13 times including two goals at the Qatar World Cup against Cameroon and Serbia.
