Xabi Alonso’s Thoughts On Taking Man Utd Job As Bayer Leverkusen Prepares For Exit

Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has previously rejected  Manchester United, with neighbours Manchester City now attempting to lure him away from the German champions.

Alonso was linked with a summer return to Liverpool, where he played for numerous years, after Jurgen Klopp announced his departure. He ended up sticking in Leverkusen, where he has won back-to-back Champions League games while seeking to defend his Bundesliga championship.

However, a move toward  Premier League is still possible, with sources in Germany stating that Leverkusen’s management is preparing for his departure in 2025. Manchester City are among the interested parties, with Alonso a possible replacement if Pep Guardiola leaves the Etihad Stadium, while Real Madrid might provide competition.

United also considered a move over the summer, but finally decided to stick with Erik ten Hag. It appeared to be a non-starter, even before the eventual decision to extend Ten Hag’s contract.

According to The Mail, Madrid remains interested, but Alonso turned down the opportunity to take over at Old Trafford over the summer. The update is consistent with April rumors that suggested the former Spain international might be hesitant to join United due to his ties to rivals Liverpool.

Former City goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon is optimistic that such concerns will not arise, saying that Alonso’s previous relationship with Guardiola may be beneficial. “Xabi knows the league, he’s got some great experience now, having managed in Spain, and winning the title in Germany with Bayer Leverkusen, without losing a game,” Pantilimon remarked at the introduction of Ladbrokes’ Gaffer of all Accas.

“He’s done a tremendous job over there; he might definitely be an option. Especially given that he previously worked with Pep Guardiola at Bayern, and that relationship may play a role in Guardiola’s replacement.
