Xavi Failed To Give 19-Year-Old Defender A Debut Despite Pressure From Barcelona

Even if the squad did not win any trophy, the 2023-24 season was still not a total disaster for Barcelona, and there are various reasons why the club’s fans would remember this campaign with fondness.

One of the most obvious of these reasons is the way several players from the young academy made their way to the very top, with Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi being the most outstanding examples, while the likes of Fermin Lopez, Hector Fort, and Marc Guiu also took the next step in their careers.

Mika Faye, a centre-back for Barcelona Atletico, also performed admirably this season but was unable to make his debut with the first team.

His performances with Rafa Marquez’s team made him a compelling contender to gain some minutes with the first-team, and according to a source from SPORT, the sports management of the club had also pressed Xavi to let him play in several matches in the penultimate stretch of the season.

The sporting area intended to reward him for his performance in the reserve team while also putting him to the test against first-tier teams. As a result, there was a lot of dissatisfaction in the club when Xavi did not play him despite bringing him up for games against Mallorca, Las Palmas, and Cadiz.

Getting Faye to play in some of the season’s final matches would have been consistent with Deco’s objective since taking over at Barcelona, which was to build the second line of the squad from youth academy players or reserve team members.
