Barcelona manager, Xavi Hernandez spoke about his disappointment following his side’s 4-1 loss to Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final on Sunday.
It was an incredible performance from Los Blancos who scored three first half goals courtesy of Vinicius Junior’s hat-trick before half-time. Fellow Brazilian, Rodrygo Goes scored the fourth for Carlo Ancelotti’s side to land Barca a heavy defeat in the final.
Though, Robert Lewandowski pulled one back to make it 2-1. But, it wasn’t enough as Madrid were all gun blazing throughout the encounter.
After the match, Xavi expressed his deep disappointment and apologized to the fans.
“I’m embarrassed. This is not the type of match we should play, especially in a final, and against Madrid,” said Xavi as echoed by Barca Universal.
“As a Barça fan, I am destroyed. I’m sorry for the fanbase. This is not the type of match we should play.”
“We have to improve so much. We’ve played one of the worst matches of the season. We lacked everything. We have to accept criticism.
“We were not up to par. I want to apologise. Congrats to Real Madrid, a deserved win.
“We can’t start a final like this. We were horrible in the first 10 minutes. We had a lot of expectations and motivation for the match. It’s a shame.”

“We disconnected from the match after the penalty call. We weren’t in the game. Football is a sport of mistakes. We did not reduce our mistakes. We increased them,” he concluded.
Barca are set to return to action on Thursday when they travel to Salamanca to play third tier Spanish side, Unionistas in the Round of 16 of the Copa del Rey.
