Granit Xhaka claimed to be unaware of talks taking place between Borussia Monchengladbach and Arsenal but has admitted he could imagine himself playing for the Premier League club.
Earlier this week Xhaka’s current side confirmed they had received a bid for their club captain, for whom Arsenal offered £33.8million last week.
Arsenal are understood to be targeting around three new additions to their playing squad in the summer, with Standard Sport reporting today that Juventus striker Alvaro Morata could follow Xhaka to the Emirates, via the Spaniard’s former club Real Madrid, as the Gunners look to tie up their business early into the summer.
Gladbach are currently on a post-season tour of Xhaka’s native Switzerland but the midfielder played no part in a friendly match with FC Luzern, instead signing autographs for fans.
Xhaka has consistently stated that he wants to have his future clarified before the European Championships, which begin for Switzerland on Saturday June 11 with a game against Albania. In an interview with Swiss television channel SRF the 23-year-old confirmed this remained the case.
Whilst he remained evasive over interest from Arsenal, saying he was “the wrong person to ask”, he did admit they were “absolutely” a club he could envisage himself playing for.
He added: “Whether there are talks or not, the clubs Gladbach and Arsenal know that, but as of now I am still a Gladbach player.
“It might change in the next weeks or it might not change.”
Xhaka received a standing ovation on what appears set to be his final appearance at Borussia-Park, a 2-0 win over Darmstadt that secured Gladbach a fourth place finish in the Bundesliga.
Arsenal have also monitored N’Golo Kante, who is reported to have a £20m buyout clause from his Leicester contract, and have previously examined the likes of Lars Bender, Adrien Rabiot and William Carvalho.
