Stefanos Tsitsipas has reached the final of the ATP Finals in London after defeating Roger Federer 6-3 6-4 on Saturday. World number six Tsitsipas produced a sensational performance to overcome all-time Grand Slam record-holder Federer, who was looking to lift the trophy at the season-ending event for the seventh time. The Greek star, the first player from his country to qualify for the event, showed fantastic resilience throughout the contest, saving 11 of 12 break points to deny his Swiss opponent any momentum. At 21 years of age, Tsitsipas, who also overcame Federer at this year’s Australian Open, is the youngest player in the ATP Finals field and he will take on defending champion Alexander Zverev or first-time semi-finalist Dominic Thiem in Sunday’s final. Speaking on BBC2 after his win, the Greek, who is making his debut in the tournament, said: I’m so proud of myself today, a great performance and once again the people were great. “I really enjoyed myself on the court and sometimes in matches like these you wonder how you recover from difficulties and break point down. “It is a mental struggle and I’m proud how many I saved today, I was trying not to give an easy time to Roger, he was playing well. “He was an inspiration as always. Playing him is the biggest honour I can have and today’s victory is probably one of my best moments of the season.” Federer’s exit means this is only the second time since 2004 that one of the ‘big three’ won’t play in the season-ending final, with Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic being knocked out in the group stage.
