Zirkzee & De Ligt Miss Out On Netherlands Call

Joshua Zirkzee and Matthijs de Ligt of Manchester United have been excluded from the Netherlands’ preliminary roster for the Nations League quarterfinals next month.

On March 20, the Netherlands hosts Spain. Three days later, they travel to Valencia for the second match.

Zirkzee, 23, has been included in every team since making his senior international debut as a substitute against Turkey at Euro 2024, earning six caps.

Since receiving his first cap in 2017, the 25-year-old De Ligt has played for the Netherlands in every squad while healthy.

The 25-man provisional squad that manager Ronald Koeman has chosen will be reduced the following week.

Despite De Ligt’s goal in Wednesday’s 3-2 victory over Ipswich, both players have had difficulty settling in at Old Trafford since joining Manchester United in the summer.

Prior to losing his place in the starting lineup to Inter Milan defender Stefan de Vrij, De Ligt was captain of the Netherlands.

He has made 25 appearances in the Premier League, starting 21 of them, reports BBC.

De Ligt was replaced at halftime in a 2-2 tie with Germany during the September international break after making errors in the build-up to both goals given up.

Zirkzee has only made 11 of his 27 appearances from the start, and he has frequently come off the bench.
