Timo Werner scored his first goal for Chelsea just four minutes into his debut for the club on Saturday afternoon.
Hakim Ziyech was forced off the field with injury at the Amex Stadium as the Blues took on Brighton.
Frank Lampard gave Chelsea fans a glimpse of their new-look exciting attack as the former Ajax man started alongside fellow new boy Werner. Ziyech’s afternoon was cut short in the second half though when he appeared to pick up an ankle knock.
The Blues were ultimately held to a 1-1 draw at Brighton though, with Ziyech being substitued due to an injury worry.
Lampard’s side took control of their opening pre-season game right from kick-off.
Reece James fired just wide in the first 30 seconds, a warning the Seagulls didn’t heed.
Three minutes later, Werner’s fellow newbie Hakim Ziyech played an impressive pass forwards to Callum Hudson-Odoi.
Hudson-Odoi scuffed a headed effort, which saw the ball fall into the path of the oncoming German striker.
Werner happily tapped home from six yards to secure the perfect start to his Chelsea career.
Werner sealed a £48million switch to Stamford Bridge side from RB Leipzig in June, not long after the club finalised a £33m move for Ziyech.
Early in the second half though, Ziyech mishit a free kick and appeared to pick up an injury in the process.
The issue looked relatively minor, but he decided to sit down and consult with the Blues’ medical staff.
He left the field following a quick conversation and was replaced by Conor Gallagher.
Chelsea fans will no doubt be hoping the injury is not too serious and this was merely a case of ‘better safe than sorry’.
The equaliser came late on as Brighton were awarded their second penalty of the game.
Willy Caballero saved from Neal Maupay earlier in the second half, but could not keep out Pascal Gross and so the game ended 1-1.
