Buffon: ‘I promised to quit football if I kept two clean sheets against Barcelona’

Gianluigi Buffon has revealed he promised to retire if he kept back-to-back clean sheets against Barcelona.

The 39-year-old managed to keep the Catalan powerhouse at bay in their recent Champions League quarter-final meeting.

Although it was tongue in cheek, the Italian international was made to take the promise back by his club’s owner.

“I had promised to quit football at the end of the season if I kept a clean sheet against Barcelona over two legs,” he told Sky Sport Italia, as reported by Football Italia.

“I told the President (Andrea Agnelli) and he said at times in life we say stupid things, not to worry and move on. So I had to take the promise back. The President has more experience than me and gave me good advice.

“Keeping a clean sheet against the Spaniards was very satisfying, because it was earned and shared with the group, with the lads in defence and all the others who ran their socks off to ensure we came away unharmed from those two games.”

After overcoming Luis Enrique’s men, Juventus now face Monaco for a place in this season’s Champions League final.

Buffon has previously played in two European Cup finals with the Old Lady, losing to AC Milan in 2003 and then Barcelona two years ago.

In the meantime Buffon is on course to win yet another Italian championship with the Bianconeri.

Juventus sit comfortably atop of the Serie A table, nine points clear of second-place Roma, with four matches remaining.
